How do I request materials be put on course reserve at the library?

Answer

The library's Course Reserves service offers the ability to designate print and physical materials, and electronic and digital materials for course reserve.

Instructors are encouraged to place personal or library copies of books, articles, and other print or physical materials on reserve for your courses.

To request print or physical materials for course reserves, please submit the Physical Course Reserves form.

To request e-materials for course reserves, please submit the E-Reserves Request form.

You may contact your department's librarian liaison with questions.

Notes about copyright and Fair Use

U.S. copyright law applies to course reserves in both electronic and print formats. Fair Use of copyrighted materials for educational purposes can be determined by considering four factors:

  1. What is the intended purpose of use?
  2. What is the nature of the work?
  3. How proportional and how substantial is the selection being used?
  4. What is the potential impact on the marketability of the work?

When in doubt, consider how you would react if your work was being used by another person. The library retains the final right to refuse to digitize a work if there is sufficient concern about violating copyright law.
